Massachusetts Social Democrats is a registered 501(c)(4) nonprofit advocacy and educational organization. Our progressive partners have the responsibilities of endorsing and campaigning for candidates, and we join with them as members of the progressive movement. Our unique task is to bring ideas and information to the movement, so that its members are armed for the fray. We do this by distributing literature and hosting educational forums and conferences.
Eldon Clingan (founder/chairman) started his adherence to social democracy by supporting the 1944 re-election of Franklin D. Roosevelt. High points of his political life include selection by Bayard Rustin to read the call to the 1958 Youth March for Integrated Schools at the Lincoln Memorial, marching in the great 1963 March for Jobs and Freedom, participation in the anti-Vietnam War movement, election to represent Manhattan in the New York City Council, serving as minority leader of that body for three years, and introducing (as principal sponsor) the first gay rights bill in the United States. Today, Eldon is a member of the Dedham, Massachusetts Democratic Town Committee and a leading member of Progressive Dedham-Westwood-Norwood. He has been a delegate to several Massachusetts Democratic state conventions.
